Second Floor_Corrected Layout

The administration with the teacher's prep rooms and the media library are all on the second floor. I wanted to put dance and music on the same floor for greater convenience as well.

Third Floor_Corrected Layout

I decided to go back to only having three floors...having a fourth floor was unnecessary. This is the third floor layout in which I was able to fit the computer rooms and the technical education on the same floor for greater student convenience. Having the science rooms close by also adds to greater learning in such subjects.

Second Floor_Layout

I decided to treat every space as a book. So what I decided to do is to bring spaces out beyond the foorprint lines of the first floor and maybe push some spaces back. This will allow for my elevations to have sort of a cantilever extension of spaces on some floors. Maybe I will put empty spaces in between classrooms with glass so students can have a view of the street.

Third Floor_Layout

The third floor plan shows a greater organization of the computer and technical education rooms. I will put some general classrooms along the perimeter of the floor as well.

FourthFloor_Layout

I decided to add a fourth floor to my school. I did this because I wanted to have greater circulation for the students and a greater floor layout overall.

First Floor

I decided to put the biggest spaces which are also the noisest on the first floor so they would not affect the classrooms and library. I have the cafeteria on the first floor with furniture layout and the gym. I also want to have a security area to check for student's identification. The core of my building will be the elevator and stairs that will be located against the rear wall.

Second Floor

This is the second floor plan layout that I have so far. I have the media library in the middle after you come out of the elevators with the science classrooms on each side.

Site Strategies

The sun rises in the east side of the building which is Smith Street. It circulates around the south side which is Atlantic Avenue and then sets on the west side which is Boerum Place.

The approach is Atlantic Avenue is a two lane street; Boerum Place has vehicular and pedestrian traffic as well.

People will walk to the school because there are apartment buildings nearby, there are bus stops nearby and a train station within walking distance.

State Street is the quietest street that is around the building, Atlantic Avenue is the noisiest street.

There is a change in grade. Atlantic Avenue is sloped downward towards the side of Smith Street.

There are views of Atlantic Avenue and Boerum Place.

These views are good because you see across the street and the entire street.

You will enter the building on Atlantic Avenue because that side has more space than the other shorter side of the building.

Yes there is opened space. There is about 35 percent of opened space on the lot since we were able to utilize only 65 percent of the lot for our building.

The surrounding buildings are high rise buildings that are much taller than the school.

The heights of the surrounding buildings will not interfere with my building because it is more flat than it is high.

I will fit my building on the site by putting it in the middle of the entire block. I will let the 35 % of free space wrap around my building.

The neighborhood buildings are made of mostly steel and brick.

I want my building to be the most interesting and central point in the neighborhood. I want it to be the most widely known building as well.

First Floor Plan_Layout

In the nightclub project I did previously I experimented with curves. During this school project I will like to experiment with straight lines. I think I will utilize all of the allowable space on the site if I use this approach. This floor plan shows the layout of the general classrooms, science classrooms, gym, and administration offices for the first floor.

3D_Section

This section was taken by cutting through the building from left to right so I can get the entire length. The interior shows the areas of where I can start to layout classrooms. Maybe my interior spaces will take the same shape as the exterior walls so the curves can relate to each other.

3D_Side Elevation

This side elevation shows the length of the building as well as the glass. I used blue to figure out where to put glass and how much of it. The curved areas is where I will put the outdoor spaces for lecture.

3D_Front Elevation

This is a 3 dimensional approach to my building and what I think it should look like...I used red, yellow and blue to distinguish the different levels and floors of the schools...as of now there are three floors...The columns are in purple and are vertical.

FloorPlan_Concept

I have created a floor plan based on all three of my concept study models. As you can see the building will be more horizontal than vertical in which I am able to tilt some parts of it. I can use this idea to stack floors on top of each other like a stack of books as I earlier envisioned.

Study_Model_1

This concept model gave me an idea of how my building should have one or more vertical cores. The base shows how an outdoor space can be created with vegetation that can also be used for lectures.

Study_Model_2

This model gave me an idea of how my building can be horizontal and long...I want to have more length than width in the design of my school.

Study_Model_3

I like the tilting idea that this model shows. This allows me to manipulate my design and have it take more forms as opposed to just straight walls.

Site_Analysis_Thoughts

When i was visiting the site I had to keep in mind the kind of building that I was asked to design. I think that a middle school is a good idea for our building. I came to this generalization because of the surrounding buildings that I noticed at the area. The Detention Center that I visited is surrounded by high rise apartment buildings, deli shops and a few parking lots. As I studied the kind of people in the area it seems that it is a family oriented neighborhood. I think that this is a good site to put a middle school as everything nearby provides convenience to everyone that lives there. The gallery I created below shows the Detention Center and also all of the surrounding buildings, businesses, boulevards and streets as well as traffic and pedestrian circulation.

Bubble_Diagram_Middle - School

This diagram shows the spaces of the school that are connected in terms of circulation...some bubbles require you to walk through one space to get to the other, while others have their own separate connections to one area.

Matrix_Middle - School

This matrix shows all of the spaces in the program of the project and how they connect.

Parti_Project2_MiddleSchool - Book_Shelves

This shelf is unique in the sense that it has a lounge spot in the middle for someone to relax and read with books stacked on each side.

I like this idea of a horizontal shelf where books are stacked from left to right...Some of the spaces can also be used to sit plants.

Parti_Project2_Middle_School

When brainstorming about designing a middle school I automatically started thinking about books since they are one of the most essential parts of education...I started to think about stacks of books and how that can become an idea for a parti.

Books generally are placed or stacked on shelves so I tried to find many types of unique kinds. This shelf is mostly vertical and has solid and void spaces.
